Ok- can we stop for a moment and appreciate the kick ass women we are seeing on the silver screen right now?
This week I have seen three current movies in the cinema, and without any hit-you-over-the-head with political agenda, they just celebrate women and the stories that we have to tell. These films were I Feel Pretty, Breaking In, and Life of The Party.
In the wake of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, it has never been more important to see a fair and empowering representation of women in film- and it finally feels like something has started to change. We are seeing movies that are teaching us to feel good about ourselves, that not only are we enough, but we are capable of ANYTHING, exactly as we are now.
These women are strong, inspiring and aren’t relying on anyone to rescue them, or help them take charge of their lives. They are doing it all themselves. It is about time these women have made an appearance on our screens, and they are paving the way for more and more stories led by amazing actresses, writers, directors and crews.
The best thing about these movies are that they are all fantastic in their own right- they don’t rely on their feminist audiences- but they appeal to everyone, regardless of gender, age or race. They are telling human stories, and allowing these stories to be accessible to all audiences. This is what we’ve been waiting for! Let’s just hope this trend continues, and we begin to see more diversity and equality in Hollywood from here on out.
